Joel Schoon Tanis
Joel is a celebrated painter who has shown his work around the United States – from Michigan to Florida to Colorado to Washington D.C.. Joel has also shown his work as far away as Kenya where he did an art show in Nairobi to raise money for the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife. His murals can be found in many schools, children’s hospitals and churches (including murals in both Kenya and Zambia).
As an illustrator, Joel has contributed to more than a half a dozen books for children. Most notably, he illustrated the New International Reader’s Version Kid’s Study Bible for Zondervan. He won the “Moonbeam Children’s Book Award” for his book Swing!. His latest book is The One, The Only Magnificent Me! He often speaks to schools about illustration and the creative process.
Joel says this about his work: “I strive to view God’s world through a child-like lens – full of color, whimsy and honesty. To accomplish this, I often juxtapose kid-like drawings with more realistic paintings while occasionally adding a few written lines of kid thought in an effort to help people consider a familiar story or part of nature with new eyes. I won’t say much more - I think if you need to explain art too much it’s like explaining why a joke is funny. You might ‘get’ the joke, but it won’t make you smile. I do hope that people ‘get’ the whimsy of my paintings and that the results do make them smile.”
